The Caltrans District 5 Active Transportation Plan will focus prioritizing bicycle and pedestrian needs on, across, and parallel to, the State Highway System throughout the California Central Coast.  This includes 29 routes totaling over 1000 miles through the counties of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito.

This will be one the first of 12 plans to be developed under a statewide consultant contract in partnership with Toole Design Group. The District 5 plan will establish a vision with local partners for a network supporting healthy communities for all users, especially in disadvantaged areas. Main goals for the plan include safety, equity, strengthening partnerships, multi-modal travel improvements, identifying needs unique to rural and main street corridors, coordinating with statewide and regional trail network systems, and maintaining long-term active transportation improvements.

Existing local and regional active transportation plan recommendations and existing facility data will inform the plan. Performance measures as well as stakeholder and public input will inform and validate bicycle and pedestrian needs, recommendations, and priorities in the district. The final plan will include an implementation plan and serve to justify increased investment in future active transportation improvements on, across, and parallel to the State Highway System.
